(People Opposed to Wastewater Without Enough Review), LEAF prepared public comments that were submitted to IDEM challenging U.S. Steel’s draft wastewater pollution permit. If approved, the permit will allow the steel mill to increase the amount of chromium it can dump into a tributary of Lake Michigan and will allow the mill five more years to comply with pollution limits for several toxins including mercury, cyanide, ammonia, zinc, copper and benzo(a)pyrene.
